Willem van Otterloo started out as student of medicine in the University of Utrecht, but soon turned to ‘cello and composition in the Amsterdam Conservatory. In his early years he composed a relatively small, but very fine oeuvre consisting of orchestral works, chamber music and songs. In 1949 Van Otterloo was appointed conductor of the Residentie-Orkest in The Hague, which he developed into a group of international acclaim. Also he made numerous recordings. His later posts include the Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra and GMD in Düsseldorf.
Van Otterloo’s Symphonietta for wind instruments (1943) is considered one of the 20th Century masterworks for winds. WASBE put it on the list of “recommended compositions” in 2005.
