Sergei Taneyef (1850-1918)

Sergei Taneyef was a multi-talented musician. He was a prolific virtuoso pianist in his time (he premiered all Tchaikofsky’s piano concertos ) and as a composer he was very productive. Taneyef also taught composition at the Conservatory in Moscow and was the teacher of i.a. Skryabin, Rakhmaninof and Glière. His works were inspired by the German tradition and only later in his career did Taneyef become more sympathetic to ideas from the Russian Five, the nationalists school, the circle around Rimsky-Korssakof.
He produced music in all genres, but nevertheless remained an unknown composer to the greater public.
